C64 - Polish Pixels in Video GamesPrint page

In April 2023, an important book for the history of games released in Poland on Commodore 64 was published. Two years later, Krzysiek Augustyn, the author of this book, brings the world of Polish game development to a wider audience by publishing an e-book in English.

I have been wanting to write at least a few sentences about this edition for a long time, a hardcover copy of which I obtained in mid-2023. I have always lacked time to sit down and enjoy such an important moment! Imagine that in this book describing Polish productions from the 80s to today's productions, among many famous authors, there was also a place for productions written under the Commocore label! On the occasion of the release of the English e-book version of this book, I had no choice but to finally sit down and simply celebrate this moment.

The book is written in an accessible way, and thanks to the rich graphic design with screenshots from games and their covers, it takes me to the 90s in the blink of an eye. I have to admit that I didn't know at least half of the titles, and certainly not their authors. It is a piece of interesting history for all fans of the Commodore 64 computer (as well as games for C16, C116 and C+4), especially in the context of Polish game development born in the difficult conditions of communism in the 80s. Thanks to the free market flourishing in the early 90s, the authors of these productions tried to catch up with the "West", which was already moving to 16-bit systems. 8-bit computers fell into the hands of future Polish programmers, graphic designers and musicians, and in this way, without documentation available in Polish, the first productions were created. Thanks to the computer scene but also outside of it. Apart from a few exceptions of games written in the 80s, the magical dream of creating a game began to come true in the 90s, with the emergence of domestic publishers.

Does the history of Polish games on the Commodore 64 end with the reading of the last page of this book? Not at all. This magic continues to this day!

E-book is available on Elysium's itch.io page: https://elysium64.itch.io/c64polishpixelsbook

A big shout-out to Krzysiek, who supports Commocore 101%!

Side note: The book features released games: Swarm 16k, Bring back my bones and a cRPG game I have been working on for many years: Meonlawel. Other than that, the book contains about 240 pages of pure entertainment!
